Will Cinque Terre turn away tourists?

The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia, and comprises five villages: Monterosso al MareVernazzaCornigliaManarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Will the government's new childhood obesity strategy have any effect?

The government promised a strategy that would take “draconian” action, in the words of health secretary Jeremy Hunt last October, to tackle the very serious obesity epidemic in children. One third of children are overweight or obese by the time they reach 11 years of age. Obesity can lead to major health problems in later life, including heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and costs the NHS more than £4bn every year.

Two-century-old shipwreck to emerge from sea at Devon beach

At low tide this week a ship wrecked more than 200 years ago is expected to reappear, the stumps of its decaying timbers poking through the sand of a north Devon beach – most likely the remains of the Sally, which left a Bristol wine merchant devastated when it ran aground with its cargo of port in September 1769.

Elephants on the path to extinction - the facts

Some experts see the brutal killings of elephants not as a battle for a commodity, but for land. As the human population booms, so does demand for space. Poaching conveniently removes elephants from the land, leaving it open to development. This is a pattern seen across western Africa, where elephant declines have been most precipitous. By 2050, 63% of remaining elephant rangelands will be compromised by human encroachment.
